The Great Baptism Formula Debate: Matthew 28:19 or Acts 2:38
It’s 2024. Christians are still debating whether there is a “formula” for baptism. One group holds to a Petrine formula (Acts 2:38). Another is dogmatic about Matthew’s “formula” (28:19). Some even go as far as telling believers if they have not been baptized according to Peter, then re-baptism is necessary or……The range of doctrines is astounding! I found a must-read historical document recording a debate between Trinitarians and Oneness Pentecostals. The following is a working document. I will be adding more to this blog for a cohesive argument on the issue. A month ago, I met a young man who was eager to work for the Lord. He had been a Catholic since birth but found the Apostolic message of a friend of mine appealing. He said, “I am not even sure if I am saved!” We discussed the Scriptures, and he agreed he needed assurance of his faith. It simply was not enough to say “I have been going to church since a boy.” Going to church alone will not save you. Entrance into God’s kingdom requires obedience to His command: “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit” (John 3:5). He was baptized in the beautiful waters of The Bahamas. Here they are, going into the water. This will be the first convert for my friend’s new church. Entrance into the Kingdom REQUIRES baptism.
